Year 3 Log

I can not resist data and patterns. The salient points ticked off like a sidebar summary of my life.

  • I exceeded my goal of 8 hrs spin time by 20 minutes per week, about 30 min per week better than last year
  • nearly half of my rides were on the trainer or my commute, more than half if you add in CX rides
  • Adding in all the “regular” rides left me about 10 rides that were new to me or adventures

Kids, inability to get out of the house, hate-hate relationship with the car, kids, and kids pretty much tell the story.   It didn’t seem nearly as boring as it does on paper, since i managed to squeeze in a lot of value and variations with a better class of people.   Mean as it sounds, my time is too precious to take risks on blind-riding dates, so I’ve been riding with people i really really like, or alone.   Many of the hours on the trainer or commuting were satisfying in their own OCD way – little maintenance to worry about and doubling up tasks, quintupling when I could watch both kids and ride the trainer and work on my laptop and drink beer.

I don’t see next year being dramatically different. Hopefully better success hitting day trips and a Spring tour – Green Mtn to Milagrosa, the Rainbow Rim, and Flying Fish have been calling to me.   Its mostly about planning, and even people who like kids say year 2 gets easier.   Fingers fucking crossed.   Trail-a-bike rides may someday start counting as mileage, as G gets more and more comfortable they will become longer and interesting. Pre-Alana, I rolled G up to the Somo Towers several times; I should be able to do both kids in the Burley (which would be hauling like 100lbs of protoplasm), or we all go out together with the trail-a-bike and trailer.   This year we managed 2 riding\camping trips (Barn Burner and Sedona), and 2 riding\cabin trips (Crazy 88 and Pinetop).   They were nearly half of my exciting out-of-town riding. They were insanely complicated logistically and necessitated several Xmas gifts to prevent future calls to the Maricopa County Department of Human Services.   But the payoffs were awesome.

I’m expecting few surprises, but if Year 4 is as good then that’s not so bad as long as I don’t break anything on me or the bikes
